Mission Statement: The Latigo Winter Buckle Series is dedicated to cultivating the values of horsemanship, sportsmanship, and community by providing inclusive, competitive opportunities for riders of all levels. Through seasonal events that promote growth and excellence, we aim to uphold the traditions of the Cowboy Way and Western heritage while fostering the development of both youth and adult riders.

The History Latigo Trails Equestrian Center 

The Latigo Winter Buckle Series is a seasonal series of six open horse shows and gymkhanas, held annually from November through April at Latigo Trails Equestrian Center in Elbert, Colorado. The series is designed to help riders at all levels—from beginners to seasoned competitors—develop their skills in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere. Whether riders are just starting out or preparing for larger competitions across the country, the series offers events and classes for everyone.

Founded in 2008, the Latigo Winter Buckle Series has been active every year since, and will be celebrating its seventeenth season this coming November. The event is held at Latigo Trails, an equestrian facility established in 2001 by the Pikes Peak Range Rider Foundation, a group committed to promoting Western heritage through youth events and activities. Their vision is to instill the core values of the Cowboy Way in the youth of the community.One unique aspect of the Latigo Winter Buckle Series is that it has been managed over the years by individuals who originally participated in the series themselves. This continuity ensures the series stays true to its roots while continually growing and improving.

Over the past year, the organization successfully hosted its 2024–2025 Winter Buckle Series, which took place on the first weekend of every month during the season. They also held the 2023–2024 series awards banquet, recognizing riders for their accomplishments and progress. A major highlight of the year was achieving a record number of gymkhana participants, a sign of the growing interest and engagement in the event.

One of the ongoing challenges for the organization has been securing sponsorships. These funds are critical for covering costs such as prizes, judges, and event supplies. With many businesses facing economic pressures, gaining sponsorship support can be difficult. To address this, the team has expanded their outreach efforts—posting flyers, educating local businesses about the series, and connecting with potential sponsors who could benefit from exposure at the events.

Looking to the future, the Latigo Winter Buckle Series is aiming to expand further. There are plans to add more classes and divisions to better serve a growing rider base. Additionally, there have been conversations about starting a summer series, offering even more opportunities for community involvement and equestrian development throughout the year.
