THE HISTORY OF SINGLE ACTION SHOOTING SOCIETY
Since its founding, the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) has played a pivotal role in bringing together enthusiasts of Cowboy Action Shooting™ and Wild Bunch Action Shooting™. Established in 1982 and incorporated in 1987, SASS was created to ensure the safety, growth, and integrity of the sport. The organization has expanded rapidly over the years, becoming a global leader in preserving and advancing these iconic shooting disciplines. What makes SASS truly stand out from other shooting organizations is its unique focus on community and inclusivity.
With over 500 affiliated clubs worldwide, SASS is not a money-driven sport. For members, it’s about more than competition, it’s about pride, camaraderie, and the thrill of the sport. While winning buckles and gaining bragging rights are rewarding, the most valuable part of SASS is the community that thrives within it. With participants ranging from 8 to 85 years old and plus, SASS is a family-friendly environment where people come for the sport and stay for the friendships they build. Over the past year, SASS has hosted a variety of prestigious events. From state championships in all 50 states to regional competitions, and even international and European championships, SASS has been at the center of the action. The National Championship, held at the Oklahoma City Gun Club, and the World Championship "End of Trail" in Phoenix, Arizona, are just two examples of how the organization continues to grow and elevate the sport globally. These events, along with regular monthly matches hosted by local clubs, create a year-round calendar that attracts thousands of participants.
One of SASS’s proudest accomplishments this year has been the launch of a scholarship program that has already distributed $1.5 million to students pursuing trade school or higher education. The National and World Championships were sold out, with 750 competitors making their mark on the sport. Despite its success, SASS faces challenges in growing the sport, particularly among younger demographics and in expanding. To overcome this, the organization has focused on reaching new audiences through trade shows and events, aiming to introduce the sport to more youth. The goal is simple: once people try it, they will love it. As SASS moves forward a new initiative is in the works, set to launch in 2026, where SASS will fund trade shows and empower local clubs to run their own events, fostering further growth of the community. Through these initiatives, SASS aims to get the word out about the sport and ensure that its legacy of safety, community, and competition lives on for years to come.
